Ridger

The Supreme ridger forms ridges and the furrows between them for crops grown on ridge-and-furrow systems. Manufactured in Faisalabad by Supreme Agri Implements, it is used both to form ridges before planting and to earth up growing crops such as potato and sugarcane.

What does a ridger do?

Some crops need to be grown on a ridge rather than flat ground. Potatoes need loose soil above the seed tuber for the new crop to develop in, and need to stay covered so tubers do not green in the light. Sugarcane benefits from the drainage and the anchorage a ridge gives a tall, heavy crop. Many vegetables are grown the same way for drainage and easier furrow irrigation.

The ridger has two distinct jobs. Before planting it forms the ridges. Later in the season it earths up — pulling soil from the furrow back onto the ridge around the growing crop, which covers developing tubers, buries small weeds in the row and reinforces the ridge shape that irrigation has slumped.

Adjustable ridge height and multiple row configurations let the machine be matched to the crop and to the tractor. Ridge spacing has to align with the tractor track and with every other implement that will pass through the crop, so getting the geometry right at the start matters.

Key features

  • Adjustable ridge height
  • Multiple row options
  • Durable construction
  • Easy operation

What is the Ridger used for?

  • Forming ridges for potato, sugarcane and vegetable planting
  • Earthing up potatoes as tubers develop
  • Reshaping ridges that have slumped under irrigation
  • Creating furrows for surface irrigation

What to keep in mind

  • Match ridge spacing to your tractor track and to every implement that will pass through later.
  • Earth up before weeds establish — the operation buries small weeds but not large ones.
  • Keep potato ridges covered; exposed tubers green in sunlight and become unsaleable.

Ridger — questions and answers

What is a ridger used for?

It forms the ridges and furrows used to grow crops such as potato, sugarcane and many vegetables, and is used again later in the season to earth up — pulling soil back onto the ridge around the growing crop.

Why are potatoes grown on ridges?

Potatoes develop tubers in loose soil above the seed piece, so they need depth of workable soil that a ridge provides. Ridging also keeps tubers covered — exposed tubers turn green in sunlight and become unsaleable — and gives drainage and a furrow for irrigation.

What does earthing up achieve?

It pulls soil from the furrow back onto the ridge, which covers developing tubers, buries small weeds growing in the row, and restores a ridge profile that irrigation and rain have slumped. Timing matters — it buries seedling weeds effectively but not established ones.
