What does a sugarcane planter do?
Sugarcane is planted from setts — cut sections of stalk carrying buds — rather than from seed. Done manually the operation needs a large crew to open furrows, lay setts by hand at roughly even spacing, and cover them. It is expensive, slow, and the spacing that results is only as consistent as the crew was on the day.
Spacing consistency matters more than it might seem. Gaps in the row are lost production for the whole life of the crop, and since sugarcane is a long-duration crop that is often ratooned for several seasons, a poor plant stand is carried for years, not months.
This planter mechanises the full sequence, so setts go in at consistent spacing and depth across the field. That gives a more uniform stand from the outset and removes the dependence on assembling a large planting crew at exactly the right time.
